Olympic Trials Morning 7

It’s going to be a big day for our swimmers. Lia Neal will swim the 50 meter freestyle this morning, and John Mendoza and Joey Petrazo will swim their 1500 meter freestyle prelims. Click here to read a story about Joey in today’s Omaha World Herald.

Hayley McGregory swims the final in the 200 meter backstroke tonight. Yesterday morning she broke the Olympic Trials meet record, only to have Elizabeth Beisel beat it again in the very next heat. Sound familiar? Hayley is seeded second in tonight’s finals. Cheer her on! (I added photos of her parents on yesterday’s entry — scroll down to see them.)

And of course, Cullen Jones will swim his 50 meter free final tonight, for his solo berth on the United States Olympic team.

Yesterday we did an interview with Eddie Erazo from UC Irvine.

Eddie Erazo

Eddie came into Olympic Trials seeded fourth in the 200 fly, and seeded 10th in the 100 fly. He’s had a great career — as a young swimmer, in college, and internationally. He took silver in the 200 fly in the Pan American Games in Brazil in 2007.

He’s just about to graduate, and is considering his options right now. Does he go to grad school (he is majoring in psychology) and continue to train for the 2012 Olympics? Or does he possible train to swim for Puerto Rico in 2012? As he put it, this could be a natural end to his career — graduating college and swimming at the Olympic Trials — but he loves swimming, and at 22, isn’t sure he’s ready to hang up his goggles.

We have had the true pleasure to spend time this week with one of the Olympic Trials officials Cecil Gordon.

Cecil Gordon

In addition to being an official, Cecil is a swim parent, a doctor, and the chair of the USA Swimming diversity committee. And he’s also very fun to hang out with.

I leave you with a couple more photos. The first is of Debra Jones (Cullen’s mom) after Cullen’s race yesterday. The second is Josh with one of Cullen’s age group coaches, Lou Petrizziello. And the third is a shot of Josh, me, and Lynn Orosco in the media stands.
